Sustainability labels on gas pumps abroad

The market for transportation fuels is international. To have any real impact, eco-labels or warning labels have to be introduced in many countries, just like health information and warnings on cigarette packages.

The Swedish Association of Green Motorists discusses and collaborates with a large number of academics, activists, politicians and organizations at the international scene, in order to promote the adoption of sustainability labels on gas pumps in as many jurisdictions as possible.

Climate and health warning labels were introduced in 2020 in Cambridge, MA, and there is an ongoing political process to introduce similar labels across Hawaii. The NGO Think Beyond the Pump has been instrumental in these efforts.

Many authorities in climate, health, psychology, communication and policymaking call for sustainability labels on points of sale of fossil fuels. By themselves, such labels cannot be expected to have a decisive influence, but evidence for their potential effectiveness starts to accumulate. Climate and health warnings on gas pumps stalled in Hawaii – again

In 2023, a bill requiring climate change and health information on gas pumps in Hawaii was passed by the State Senate but was later blocked by the House Committee on Energy & Environmental Protection. In 2024, the bill got stuck in the same committee. Hawaii may still become a pioneer if the bill is passed into law in 2025. Read more.
